Leaders are human but they probably think they need to appear super-human in the conference room. There's no shame in having emotions, said Vera Raposo at Small Business Branding recently, just as long as you are able to keep it in check at the office. She offers a few handy tips for staying in control of your emotions without seeming robotic:
Take a deep breath – “Breathing is an effective strategy for all sorts of issues such as panic attacks, anger control or simply switching back to a positive state,” Raposo wrote. Take a break from work, go to a quiet room and focus on your breathing. Pull it in and slowly let it out. You can visualize your breath as “a black burst of air” exiting your body.
Take control back – “After a few deep breathing exercises, tell yourself that you’re in control of your situation,” Raposo wrote. Tell yourself now is the time to concentrate on business and that you can refocus on the thing that is upsetting you later. “By analyzing the issue in this manner you’ll feel more in control of your emotions and better able to separate them from your business.”
Give yourself a break – “If at all possible, take a short physical break from your business,” Raposo wrote. “Sometimes changing the scenery or a little time away is all it takes. Use this time to either concentrate on the positive aspects of your life or to simply unwind completely and not think about the business at all.”
