7 Questions for Aspiring Leaders
You may be the leader of your company, but do you want to be? Art Petty posed that question on Building Better Leaders this week and followed it up with a handy list of questions any manager or leader can ask themselves to find out if leading in really in them.
Petty said that many first-time leaders kind of get there by accident and then just do the job because they're already doing it. He said some surveys he's read show that about half of these first-timers don't cut it. Ask yourself:
- Can you say why you want to lead people?
- What do you think is the “true role” of a leader?
- What different skill set will you need to lead that you don't currently have?
- Can you let go of being the expert in order to lead?
- Do you have the skills and personality to be a leader?
- Do you get that the buck will stop with you and you alone will be responsible for success or failure?
- What will your workday be like as a leader?
