Should You Monitor Your Employees' Web Use?

Here's an interesting read on employees using social media at work. Many business owners aren't aware of just how much it's costing them in lost productivity (several studies I've seen estimate it to be in the billions of dollars annually). Ouch!

Over the years I've noticed just how unproductive the average employee can be — even those in IT making good money. Based on what I see, it appears that employees are goofing off about half the time. Combine that with the fact that we only use a tiny percentage of our brain power and you've got yourself the ideal formula for business mediocrity at best.

So what's the solution? No doubt it's setting your employees and your business up for success using good filtering and monitoring tools. I was featured in the January issue of Entreprenuer Magazine where I was asked about employee monitoring and Big Brother. I'll say this: I understand the human side of the equation...micromanagement is for the birds. However, many business owners believe that employees would never put personal life over work priorities. I want to say to those people: pull your heads out of the sand and wake up to the new reality. My point is: you've got a business to run. Are you paying your employees to socialize or to produce? It's really that simple.

Here are some steps you can take right now to see just what your employees are up to:
