Oren Harari: Should Leaders Go Back to Basics?

It went something like this: Now that we’re in a recession, do you believe that leaders are de-emphasizing innovation by going “back to basics”? (A variant of this question is: Do you believe that too little risk is being taken in organizations now because leaders are going back to basics?

by Oren Harari Wednesday Jul 15, 2009Back in the 1970’s, Digital Equipment Corporation, or DEC, was lauded as a pioneering high-tech firm. Its PDP and VAX product lines were considered the most popular minicomputers for the scientific and engineering communities. The DEC minicomputer, in fact, was arguably a “game changer” for a corporate market that had traditionally relied on “big-iron” mainframes from the likes of IBM. The reason I bring up DEC is because in 1977, its founder and CEO Ken Olsen—a recognized high-tech “visionary”-- made the observation that he could not for the life of him figure out why anyone would want a computer in their home.
